Kensington Town Hall puts this one in west London rather than the tech corridors east of the City, and late April is arguably the best window of the British year: Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens are in blossom, daylight stretches past eight, and the weather is mild without being crowded-summer busy. Victoria and Albert Museum. Ten minutes from the venue on foot and free to enter, the V&A is the deepest design and applied-arts collection in the country. Do not attempt all of it: pick two or three galleries, and use the garden courtyard as a break. Late openings on Friday evenings suit a post-conference visit better than a rushed lunchtime.
Kensington Gardens and the Serpentine. The park begins a few streets from the town hall and is at its best in late April, when the avenues are in leaf and the Serpentine is busy with rowing boats. A loop past the Albert Memorial and the Serpentine Galleries takes about an hour. It is the simplest way to reset between a morning and afternoon track.
Natural History Museum. The Waterhouse building on Cromwell Road is worth entering for the architecture alone, and entry is free. Arrive at opening or in the last two hours to avoid school groups, which dominate the middle of the day in term time. Ninety minutes covers the main hall and one wing at a comfortable pace.
Design Museum and Holland Park. A short walk west, the Design Museum sits on the edge of Holland Park in a converted 1960s building with a striking hyperbolic roof. Heathrow is closest and best connected to west London, with a direct Piccadilly line ride or a faster Elizabeth line route with one change. Gatwick and Stansted work but add rail time across the centre.
