ConFoo brings its multi-track developer programme to Montreal in late February, the coldest stretch of a Quebec winter and precisely when the city's underground infrastructure earns its reputation. Downtown is stitched together by kilometres of climate-controlled passages linking metro stations, hotels and malls, so you can move between venue, lodging and dinner without going outside. Montreal-Trudeau International (YUL) is roughly 20 km west of downtown, served by the 747 express bus that runs around the clock and takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on traffic. The STM metro has four lines and is the fastest way across the centre, running warm and frequently through winter. Via Rail connects to Toronto, Quebec City and Ottawa from Gare Centrale, itself plugged into the underground network.

RESO underground city. More than thirty kilometres of connected pedestrian tunnels link metro stations, shopping complexes, offices and hotels beneath downtown. In late February it is less a curiosity than the practical way to get around. Following it from Place-des-Arts to Gare Centrale takes about an hour and needs no coat.
Notre-Dame Basilica. The Gothic Revival interior in deep blue and gold is the city's signature building, and the evening Aura light and sound show projects onto the vaulting and altarpiece. Mount Royal. The hill the city is named for rises directly behind downtown, with the Kondiaronk lookout giving a full view over the skyline and the Saint Lawrence. In February the paths are snow-packed and used for snowshoeing and sledding. Around two hours; boots with grip are essential.
Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Canada's oldest art museum, spread across several linked pavilions on Sherbrooke Street with Quebec and international collections. How cold does Montreal get in February?
Genuinely cold, routinely well below freezing and colder with wind chill. A proper winter coat, hat, gloves and insulated boots are not optional.
Do I need to speak French?
No. Montreal is bilingual and downtown service staff switch to English readily, though signage is primarily in French. A greeting in French is appreciated.
How do I get in from the airport?
The 747 express bus runs 24 hours to downtown and Gare Centrale in 30 to 60 minutes. Taxis and rideshare are quicker outside peak traffic but cost substantially more.
