Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall. The memorial and museum to the 1937 atrocity, sober and very well presented, and essential to understanding the city. Entry is free but requires advance online reservation. Two hours, and it is not a casual stop - leave space in the day afterwards.

Is it easier to fly into Shanghai?
Often yes. International connections to Shanghai are more frequent, and the high-speed train reaches Nanjing South in about 75 minutes with departures throughout the day.
