Hortus Botanicus. One of the oldest botanical gardens in the world, founded in 1638 near Waterlooplein, with a three-climate glasshouse and a butterfly house on a compact site. It takes about an hour and stays calm even when the rest of the centre is busy. A good place to hold a quiet conversation.
Anne Frank House. The canal-side building on the Prinsengracht where the Frank family hid, preserved as a museum. Tickets are released online on a fixed schedule and sell out quickly, so plan several weeks ahead. The visit takes about an hour and is deliberately spare and sobering.
How long is the train from Schiphol?
Fifteen to twenty minutes to Amsterdam Centraal and around eight minutes to Amsterdam Zuid. Trains run frequently, including a reduced night service.
Should I cycle?
Only if you are comfortable in fast, rule-bound bike traffic. Trams and walking cover the canal ring perfectly well, and the centre is small enough not to need a bike.
What weather should I plan for?
Highs around fifteen to eighteen degrees Celsius with wind and frequent showers. A waterproof jacket is more practical than an umbrella on the canals.
