Iasi, in Romania's northeast near the Moldovan border, is the country's oldest university city and has quietly become a substantial software hub. A three-day developer conference here draws heavily on that local engineering community. Late September brings warm afternoons, cool nights and the start of the wine harvest in the surrounding Moldavian hills.
Iasi International Airport (IAS) is around eight kilometres from the centre, roughly twenty minutes by taxi or ride-hailing app, with routes to Bucharest and several European hubs. Connecting through Bucharest Otopeni (OTP) adds a domestic flight of about an hour, or a long overnight train. Within Iasi, trams and buses cover the centre, though most of the university district is walkable.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Kiwitaxi. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on Auto Europe.
Romania has some of the fastest and cheapest fixed and mobile internet in Europe, so connectivity is rarely an issue in the city. EU visitors roam at home rates; others should arrange an eSIM before arriving, as English-language SIM support at the small airport is limited. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Palace of Culture. The neo-Gothic landmark dominating the city centre, housing four museums including science and technology and ethnography collections under one roof. Its scale surprises first-time visitors; two hours covers a couple of the museums comfortably.
Copou Park. The city's oldest public park, up the hill near the university, containing the linden tree associated with the poet Eminescu and a small botanical presence. It is a fifteen-minute walk from the centre and an easy hour between sessions.
Trei Ierarhi Monastery. A seventeenth-century church whose entire stone exterior is carved in intricate geometric relief, unique among Romanian religious buildings. It sits on the main boulevard, takes half an hour to see, and is free to enter outside services.
Cotnari wine region. One of Romania's historic vineyard areas, about an hour northwest, known for aromatic white wines and busy with harvest activity in late September. A visit needs a car or an arranged tour and works best as a half-day trip.
How do I fly to Iasi?
Iasi International (IAS) has direct routes to Bucharest and several European cities. Otherwise connect via Bucharest Otopeni and take a short domestic flight.
What currency is used?
The Romanian leu. Cards are accepted almost everywhere in the city, though small amounts of cash help at markets and rural stops.
What is the weather like in late September?
Warm, often sunny afternoons with cool evenings and a real chance of the first autumn rain. A jacket for the evenings is enough.
