Venue and hotel networks in Santa Clara are consistently fast. Caltrain corridor coverage is good, though it dips in the coastal hills. Computer History Museum. In Mountain View, twenty minutes from Santa Clara, holding the definitive collection on computing from mechanical calculators through to the early web, including a working restored PDP-1. Stanford University campus. Palo Alto's sandstone quadrangle, Hoover Tower and the Rodin sculpture garden are open to visitors year-round, with the Cantor Arts Center free to enter. The campus is large and best covered on foot or by bicycle. Two hours minimum; parking is easier at weekends.
Baylands Nature Preserve. Palo Alto's edge of the bay, with boardwalks over tidal marsh and one of the largest remaining wetlands on the peninsula. February brings migratory birds and dramatic storm light. Around ninety minutes on the flat loop trails; paths can flood after heavy rain.
California Avenue, Palo Alto. A low-key second high street away from the Stanford tourist route, with a Sunday farmers market, independent cafés and bookshops. It is where peninsula locals actually eat. An hour or two over lunch, and it is a short walk from the Caltrain stop of the same name.
