The city's sheer size means venue location matters more than in most places — check which zone the event sits in before booking a hotel.

Science Museum. Seven floors covering computing, space, medicine and industry, including early Babbage engines and a substantial mathematics gallery designed by Zaha Hadid. Free entry. Two to three hours, and weekday afternoons in term time are the quietest.
Sir John Soane's Museum. An architect's house preserved exactly as left in 1837, crammed with antiquities, paintings and mirrors arranged to manipulate light. Entry is free with timed booking. Ninety minutes, and the candlelit evening openings are exceptional if a slot can be secured.
