FLOCK runs as a single October day in San Francisco, which is quietly the best month to be here: the summer fog retreats and the city gets its warmest, clearest weather of the year. For an autonomous-operations and SRE audience the setting needs little introduction, but a one-day format means choosing a compact plan. Stick to the waterfront and the northern neighbourhoods rather than trying to sweep the whole peninsula.
San Francisco International (SFO) connects to downtown by BART in roughly 30 minutes, running directly from the international terminal. Oakland (OAK) is a workable alternative via BART with one transfer, and San Jose (SJC) is an hour south by road or Caltrain. Within the city, Muni buses and the historic F-line streetcar cover the waterfront, and a Clipper card or contactless tap works across all of it.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Welcome Pickups. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on EconomyBookings.

Coverage downtown is good and free Wi-Fi is near-universal in cafes and hotel lobbies. International visitors will find an eSIM activated before landing far cheaper than roaming for a short stay. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Exploratorium. A hands-on science museum spread along Pier 15 on the Embarcadero, built around experiments you operate yourself rather than displays you read. The waterfront setting means you can combine it with a walk toward the Ferry Building. Two to three hours, and adult-only evening sessions run on Thursdays. Tickets on Go City →
Ferry Building Marketplace. The restored 1898 terminal on the Embarcadero now holds a food hall of Bay Area producers, with a large farmers market spilling outside on Saturday mornings. It is the most efficient single stop for eating well near downtown. An hour, or two if you time it with the market.
Presidio Tunnel Tops. A newer park built over the highway tunnels, giving open lawns and overlooks with the Golden Gate Bridge framed directly ahead. October afternoons here are reliably clear, which is not true most of the year. Allow two hours including the walk down to Crissy Field.
de Young Museum. In Golden Gate Park, with American and global collections and an observation tower that is free to enter for a view across the park to the ocean. It is a half-hour ride from downtown, so treat it as a committed half-day. Ninety minutes inside is comfortable. Tickets on Tiqets →
How do I get from SFO into the city?
BART runs directly from the airport to downtown stations in about 30 minutes and is the simplest option. Rideshare takes a similar time outside peak traffic but costs considerably more.
What is the weather like in October?
October is typically San Francisco's warmest and clearest month, with the summer fog largely gone. Evenings still cool quickly, so bring a layer.
Do I need a car?
No. Muni, BART and rideshare cover the city well, and parking downtown is expensive and scarce. A car only makes sense for trips outside the city.
