Brussels in late September is back to full working rhythm, the European institutions in session and the weather settled into cool, changeable autumn. For a three-day engineering conference the city's real advantage is its position: high-speed trains put London, Paris, Amsterdam and Cologne all within roughly two hours, making it one of the easiest places in Europe for a distributed community to converge.
Brussels Airport (BRU) in Zaventem connects to Brussels-Central by train in about twenty minutes. Charleroi (CRL), used by low-cost carriers, is fifty kilometres south with a coach transfer of about an hour. Eurostar and high-speed services arrive at Brussels-Midi. The metro, tram and bus network runs on one ticket and covers the central districts well.

Belgian networks are reliable across the capital, and EU roaming covers most European attendees. A prepaid eSIM is the straightforward answer for anyone arriving from outside the EU. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Grand-Place. The guildhall-lined central square, UNESCO-listed and most impressive in the evening when the gilded facades are lit. It is a five-minute walk from Brussels-Central station, costs nothing, and functions as the reference point for the whole lower town.
Atomium. The 1958 World's Fair structure of nine linked spheres in Heysel, north of the centre, with exhibition space inside and a view from the top sphere. Reached in about twenty-five minutes on metro line 6; allow ninety minutes including the queue. Tickets on Tiqets →
Magritte Museum. A dedicated collection of the surrealist's work on the Mont des Arts, part of the Royal Museums complex and walkable from the central hotels. Compact and coherent, it takes around ninety minutes and pairs with the hilltop view over the lower city. Tickets on Tiqets →
Comic strip route. Dozens of large-scale murals of Belgian comic characters painted on gable walls across the centre, forming a self-guided walking trail. Maps are available from tourist offices; an hour covers the densest cluster around the Marolles and city centre.
Which station should I arrive at by train?
Brussels-Midi handles Eurostar and international high-speed services. Brussels-Central is closest to the historic centre for domestic and airport trains.
How do I get in from Brussels Airport?
Direct trains reach Brussels-Central in about twenty minutes, running several times an hour.
What is the weather like in late September?
Cool and changeable, with a genuine likelihood of rain on any given day. A waterproof layer is more useful than an umbrella in the wind.
