October is one of the better months to be in Rome: the crushing summer heat has gone, daytime temperatures stay comfortable for walking, and the queues at the major sites have thinned from their August peak. Rain becomes more likely as the month progresses. Rome's metro has only three lines and misses much of the historic centre, so expect to walk or use buses and taxis for central journeys.

Italian mobile networks cover Rome comprehensively, including most of the metro. Trastevere. Across the Tiber, this district of narrow cobbled lanes holds much of the city's evening life and its more interesting trattorias. It sits within walking distance of the centre via Ponte Sisto. Best after dark, when the piazzas fill.
