IEEE AIxVR 2027, the 9th IEEE International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and eXtended and Virtual Reality, is an academic conference devoted to the meeting point of artificial intelligence and immersive technology. Formerly known as IEEE AIVR, it covers virtual, augmented and mixed reality research that uses intelligent methods, as well as AI work that makes immersive systems more capable, adaptive and natural to use. The 2027 edition is held in Vancouver, Canada, from 25 to 27 January 2027. It is designed as an in-person event, with remote presentation options for authors unable to travel. Accepted papers are published by IEEE Computer Society Press and submitted for inclusion in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library, and the programme usually includes paper sessions, keynotes, workshops and demos. Researchers, graduate students and industry practitioners working on topics such as intelligent virtual agents, generative content for XR, computer vision for AR, and user modelling in immersive environments attend to present work and find collaborators. As AI increasingly shapes how 3D worlds are built and experienced, the conference offers a focused forum for that intersection.

IEEE AIxVR brings AI and immersive-reality researchers to downtown Vancouver in late January, when the city is at its wettest but rarely freezing, with daytime temperatures usually a few degrees above zero. Sessions are planned for the UBC Robson Square area, right in the downtown core, so hotels, food courts and the waterfront are all within walking distance. The hook for visitors: snow-capped North Shore mountains visible from the city centre, with ski runs a short trip away.
Vancouver International Airport (YVR) sits on Sea Island south of the city. The Canada Line SkyTrain runs from the terminal to downtown stations such as Vancouver City Centre and Waterfront in roughly 25–30 minutes, making a taxi unnecessary. Travellers already in the Pacific Northwest can also arrive by Amtrak Cascades from Seattle into Pacific Central Station, or by ferry from Vancouver Island. Many visa-exempt visitors still need an eTA before flying to Canada.

Free Wi-Fi is common in cafés and on campus, but roaming charges in Canada can be steep for international visitors, so a local data plan matters. An eSIM bought before departure keeps maps and messaging working from the moment the plane lands at YVR. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Vancouver Art Gallery. The gallery sits directly beside Robson Square, so it fits neatly into a lunch break or the hour after the last session. Expect strong Canadian and Indigenous collections, including work by Emily Carr. Allow about 90 minutes and check the evening opening day for a quieter visit.
Stanley Park Seawall. The seawall loop around Stanley Park is roughly 9 km and takes two to three hours on foot, or under an hour by rented bike. In January bring a waterproof layer; on clear days the views of Lions Gate Bridge and the North Shore peaks are excellent.
Granville Island Public Market. A short walk and a small ferry hop across False Creek lead to this covered market of food stalls, local produce and craft studios. It works well as a rainy-day outing; go late morning on a weekday and budget about two hours including the surrounding galleries.
Vancouver Lookout. The observation deck near Waterfront Station gives a 360-degree view over the harbour, Gastown and the mountains, and admission is usually valid for the whole day so you can return after dark. Combine it with a walk through Gastown's cobbled streets afterwards. Tickets on Tiqets →
How do I get from YVR to the conference area?
Take the Canada Line SkyTrain from the airport to Vancouver City Centre station, about 25–30 minutes; Robson Square is a short walk from there.
What is the weather like in Vancouver in late January?
Expect cool, damp weather with frequent rain and highs of roughly 5–8 °C; snow in the city itself is uncommon but possible, so pack a waterproof jacket.
Do I need a visa or eTA to attend?
Visa-exempt travellers arriving by air generally need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), while others need a visitor visa; check the Government of Canada site well before booking.
