The name is not a metaphor. J On The Beach puts a big-data and JVM audience on the Málaga waterfront at the tail end of October, when the Mediterranean is still around twenty-one degrees and the beach bars have not yet closed for winter. The city's relationship with its shoreline is the thing to understand here: a working port on one side, six kilometres of sand on the other, and fish grilled on skewers over open wood fires between them.
From Málaga Airport, the express bus line A runs to the Alameda and the bus station roughly every twenty to thirty minutes, while the Cercanías C-1 train is faster at about twelve minutes but drops passengers slightly further from the seafront. Taxis into the coastal districts take fifteen to twenty minutes. Coastal trains also serve Torremolinos and Fuengirola for anyone staying along the beach.

La Malagueta and the espeto. The city beach starts a ten-minute walk from the old town, and its defining ritual is the espeto, sardines threaded on a cane and roasted over a wood fire in a sand-filled boat. Beach restaurants serve them by the half-dozen from midday, cheapest and best away from the promenade's western end.
Centre Pompidou Málaga. The French museum's outpost sits under a coloured glass cube at the edge of the port, holding rotating selections from the Paris collection. Muelle Uno and La Farola. The redeveloped quay runs from the old lighthouse to the marina, lined with terraces looking back at the Gibralfaro hill. Walking it end to end takes twenty minutes and connects the cruise port with the beach, which makes it the spine of any evening spent near the water.
Pedregalejo and El Palo. Two former fishing villages, now eastern suburbs, keep low houses and beachfront restaurants without the promenade crowds. Bus 11 gets there in about twenty minutes from the centre, and Sunday lunch here is a local institution. This is where Málaga eats seafood when it is not showing visitors around.
Is swimming realistic in late October?
Yes for most people. Sea temperatures hold around 20 to 22°C into November, warmer than the air on some mornings, and the city beaches stay in use well past the summer season.
How much rain should be expected?
Autumn is Málaga's wetter half, and late October can deliver a short, heavy storm. It rarely lasts a full day, and highs stay in the low twenties either side of it.
Does the airport connection run late enough for evening flights?
The train and the A bus both operate until around midnight. For very early departures, a taxi from the beach districts takes about twenty minutes and is the only dependable option.
