London in early October turns cool and often grey, with daylight shortening and rain a standing possibility. Enterprise Java events in the capital have long favoured the eastern districts, where the City and Docklands hold the financial-sector engineering teams that make up much of the audience. The Underground puts the whole of central London within half an hour of almost any venue, so evenings need not stay near the conference.
Heathrow (LHR) connects via the Elizabeth line and Piccadilly line, reaching central London in thirty to fifty minutes. Gatwick (LGW) runs the Gatwick Express to Victoria in about thirty minutes. Stansted, Luton, and London City serve other routes, the last being closest to Docklands. Contactless bank cards work directly on the Underground, DLR, buses, and most rail services without a separate ticket.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Welcome Pickups. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on Auto Europe.
UK networks cover London densely, including most Underground platforms. An eSIM is the simplest route for visitors, particularly those arriving from outside the UK after roaming rules changed. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Tower of London. A short walk from the City's eastern edge and directly served by Tower Hill station. The Crown Jewels and the medieval fortress buildings need around three hours. Yeoman Warder tours run through the day and are included in admission. Arriving at opening avoids the heaviest queues for the jewel house. Tickets on Go City →
Tate Modern and the Millennium Bridge. The converted Bankside power station holds a free permanent collection, with paid exhibitions alongside. Crossing the Millennium Bridge to St Paul's afterwards takes five minutes and gives the best river view in the City. Two hours covers a focused visit to the main galleries.
Greenwich by river. Thames Clipper boats run from central piers to Greenwich in about thirty minutes, passing Canary Wharf on the way. The Royal Observatory, Cutty Sark, and Maritime Museum cluster together on arrival. Half a day is right, and the boat journey is more interesting than the equivalent DLR ride. Tickets on Tiqets →
Sky Garden. A free public garden on the upper floors of the Fenchurch Street building, in the heart of the City. Booking is required and slots open weeks in advance. Forty-five minutes is enough for the views north over the Thames and west toward Westminster. It is the cheapest high-level viewpoint in London.
Which London airport is most convenient?
It depends on the venue. Heathrow has the widest long-haul network, while London City is closest to Docklands and the eastern City.
Do I need an Oyster card?
No. Contactless bank cards and phone payments work directly on the Underground, DLR, buses, and most rail journeys.
What is the weather like in early October?
Cool and frequently wet, typically twelve to sixteen degrees Celsius. A waterproof jacket is worth more than an umbrella in wind.
