Sofia sits at five hundred metres in a basin below Vitosha mountain, which rises directly behind the city and stays visible from most of the centre. Late September is warm and dry at around twenty-two degrees, with the first colour appearing on the higher slopes. Bulgaria's cloud-native community has grown alongside a large outsourcing and product engineering sector, and the city is inexpensive by European standards without feeling provincial.
Sofia Airport (SOF) is ten kilometres east, connected by Metro line M4 from Terminal 2 to Serdika in the centre in about twenty minutes for a very low fare. Terminal 1 requires a free shuttle to reach the metro. Taxis are cheap but should be booked at the official desk inside the terminal rather than accepted from touts in arrivals.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Kiwitaxi. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on Auto Europe.
Bulgarian mobile data is fast and among the cheapest in the European Union, with good coverage in the city and on the metro. A data eSIM loaded before travelling removes any roaming concern for visitors arriving from outside the EU. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. The neo-byzantine cathedral with gold-leaf domes dominates the centre and holds a crypt museum of Orthodox icons in the lower level. The main nave is free to enter; the crypt is ticketed. Twenty minutes above ground and forty below is a reasonable allowance. Modest dress is expected.
Vitosha mountain. A national park rising to well over two thousand metres directly south of the city, reachable by bus in around forty minutes to Aleko or the lower trailheads. Marked trails range from gentle forest paths to the Cherni Vrah summit. Weather changes fast at altitude; carry a layer even on warm days.
Boyana Church. A UNESCO-listed medieval church on the mountain's lower slopes, holding thirteenth-century frescoes that predate the Italian Renaissance in style. Visitor numbers inside are strictly capped and visits last a few minutes at a time. Combine it with the nearby National History Museum in a single half-day trip.
Ancient Serdica complex. Roman streets, foundations and a basilica sit exposed beneath and around Serdika metro station in the middle of the city, integrated into the pedestrian level. It is free and open air, taking half an hour. The adjacent St George Rotunda is the oldest building in Sofia and still in use.
How do I get from the airport to the centre?
Metro line M4 runs from Terminal 2 to Serdika in about twenty minutes. From Terminal 1, take the free inter-terminal shuttle to reach the metro station.
What currency is used?
Bulgaria uses the lev. Cards are accepted in most city establishments, though small amounts of cash are useful for markets, mountain huts and some taxis.
What is the weather like in late September?
Warm and generally dry, with highs around twenty to twenty-four degrees Celsius in the city. Vitosha is noticeably cooler and windier at elevation.
