A single day in Cologne puts the cathedral squarely at the centre of any plan — it stands directly beside the main station, so it is unavoidable and worth the attention. Late October is cool and grey, with the Rhine running high and the riverside promenade largely emptied of summer crowds. The old town's brewery houses, serving the local Kölsch in small glasses, fill the gap the weather leaves.
Cologne/Bonn Airport (CGN) connects to the Hauptbahnhof by S-Bahn in around 15 minutes. Düsseldorf (DUS) is an alternative roughly 45 minutes north by train. Cologne's main station sits on the high-speed network with frequent ICE services to Frankfurt, Brussels and beyond. The cathedral, old town and Rhine promenade are all within a few minutes' walk of the station itself.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Kiwitaxi. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on Auto Europe.
German networks cover Cologne comprehensively, including the airport rail link and the city centre. An eSIM arranged before travelling sidesteps the identity registration required for German prepaid SIMs and works on arrival. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Cologne Cathedral. A Gothic structure begun in 1248 and finished in 1880, and for a few years the tallest building in the world. Entry to the nave is free; the 533-step tower climb is ticketed and steep. Directly beside the main station.
Museum Ludwig. Adjacent to the cathedral, holding a major collection of twentieth-century art including one of the largest Picasso holdings in Europe and substantial Pop Art. Well organised and manageable in two hours. Requires no travel from the station area. Tickets on Tiqets →
Old town brewery houses. Früh, Päffgen and Sion serve Kölsch in 200-millilitre glasses, replaced automatically by blue-aproned waiters until you place a beer mat on top. The system is the experience. All within the old town streets south of the cathedral.
Rhine promenade and Hohenzollern Bridge. The rail bridge beside the cathedral carries a pedestrian walkway with the classic view back to the old town, and the promenade runs south from there. A twenty-minute walk, best in the late afternoon as the lights come on.
How do I get from the airport to the centre?
Cologne/Bonn Airport connects to the main station by S-Bahn in around 15 minutes, running frequently through the day.
Is the cathedral free to enter?
The nave is free to visit. The tower climb and the treasury are ticketed separately, and the tower involves 533 steps.
What is the weather like in late October?
Cool and often grey, with daytime temperatures around ten degrees Celsius. Rain is common, so a waterproof layer is advisable.
