Mountain View sits at the heart of Silicon Valley, and a single-day AI conference here comes with an unusual amount of context on the doorstep: Google's campus, the Computer History Museum and NASA Ames are all within a few kilometres. Mid-October is the region's finest weather, dry and around 24C by day with cool evenings. Castro Street provides the walkable restaurant strip that the surrounding low-rise sprawl otherwise lacks.
San Jose (SJC) is the closest airport at about 20km, while San Francisco (SFO) is roughly 40km north with far more international routes. Caltrain runs from San Francisco to Mountain View station in around an hour and drops you at the top of Castro Street. From SFO, connect via BART to Millbrae then Caltrain south. Ride-hailing is the practical alternative for door-to-door trips.

Coverage across the Peninsula is excellent, though building interiors can be patchy. Visitors from outside North America should load a travel eSIM before departure, since US roaming rates are among the steepest anywhere. Computer History Museum. The definitive collection covering computing from mechanical calculators through to early neural network hardware, sited a short drive from central Mountain View. The restored PDP-1 and IBM 1401 demonstrations are the highlights. Check demo schedules before visiting. Two to three hours does it justice.
Shoreline Park and Bay Trail. Wetland trails on the bay edge behind the Shoreline Amphitheatre, good for birdlife and flat cycling with views across the water to the East Bay hills. October light in the late afternoon is exceptional. Bring layers, as bay wind picks up sharply. Ninety minutes on foot.
Stanford University campus. Fifteen minutes north in Palo Alto, the sandstone quadrangle, Hoover Tower and Rodin sculpture garden are open to visitors. The Cantor Arts Center charges no admission. It is an easy half-day and pairs well with University Avenue for lunch. Parking is difficult; arrive by Caltrain or rideshare.
Which airport should I fly into?
San Jose (SJC) is closest at around 20km, but San Francisco (SFO) has far broader international service. From SFO, Caltrain or a rideshare covers the 40km south in 45 to 70 minutes depending on traffic.
Do I need a rental car?
Not for a single-day conference near Castro Street, which Caltrain serves directly. A car helps if you plan to visit multiple Valley sites, but parking and traffic on the 101 corridor are significant drawbacks.
What should I pack for October in the Bay Area?
Layers. Days are warm and dry, often around 24C, but evenings drop sharply and coastal fog can arrive without warning. A light jacket is essential after sunset.
