Kaiserburg. The imperial castle on the sandstone ridge at the north end of the old town, with a deep well, a Romanesque chapel and a walkway along the walls. The view back over the rooftops is the reason to climb up. Around ninety minutes including the approach.
Documentation Center Nazi Party Rally Grounds. Built into the unfinished Congress Hall on the former rally grounds, this museum examines the mechanics of the regime's propaganda directly and unflinchingly. Two hours, plus tram time from the centre. Parts of the site have undergone renovation, so check current arrangements.
Germanisches Nationalmuseum. The largest museum of German cultural history, covering everything from medieval instruments to scientific instruments and early globes. Too large to complete; pick two departments. Two hours, at the southern edge of the old town.
Handwerkerhof and the city walls. A small walled craft courtyard beside the Königstor gate, and the surviving medieval walls that ring the old town. Walking a section of the wall circuit takes about forty-five minutes and costs nothing. Best in the morning before the cold sets in.
How do I reach the city from Nuremberg Airport?
The U2 underground line runs directly from the terminal to the main station in around twelve minutes, with frequent departures.
Will the Christmas market be open?
The Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt traditionally opens on the Friday before the first Advent Sunday, which is usually the last week of November, so a mid-month visit will just miss it.
Is English widely spoken?
In hotels and larger restaurants, yes. In smaller Franconian pubs a few German phrases are appreciated and sometimes necessary.
