Tokyo in early December is cold, dry and exceptionally clear, with autumn colour lingering in the parks well into the month. For a combined open source, automotive and embedded Linux event, the city's proximity to Japan's engineering and manufacturing base is the substantive draw. Tokyo's scale is the main adjustment for visitors: it functions as a set of connected centres rather than one downtown.
Narita (NRT) is 60 to 90 minutes from central Tokyo by Narita Express or Keisei Skyliner, while Haneda (HND) is far closer at around 30 minutes by monorail or Keikyu line. The rail and subway network is dense and punctual, though operated by several companies — a Suica or Pasmo IC card smooths over the transfers. Last trains run around midnight, earlier than many visitors expect.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Welcome Pickups. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on EconomyBookings.
Japanese public wifi requires registration and is inconsistent outside major stations. An eSIM is by far the least troublesome option for a week-long stay. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Meiji Jingu. A Shinto shrine set in 70 hectares of planted forest beside Harajuku station, reached by a long gravel approach through towering torii gates. The contrast with the surrounding city is the point. Ninety minutes, and early morning is genuinely peaceful.
Miraikan. The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation on Odaiba, covering robotics, space exploration and computing with substantial interactive exhibits. Strong technical depth for a general-audience museum. Two to three hours, reached by the automated Yurikamome line. Tickets on Klook →
Akihabara. The electronics and subculture district, where multi-storey component shops still sell discrete parts by the drawer alongside the anime retail. The back-alley parts markets are the interesting survival. Two hours, and weekday afternoons are the least crowded.
Shinjuku Gyoen. A large garden combining Japanese, English and French landscape styles, holding autumn colour into early December. A small entry fee keeps it calm. Ninety minutes, and it is a ten-minute walk from Shinjuku station's south exit. Tickets on Klook →
Which airport is more convenient?
Haneda is much closer to central Tokyo, roughly 30 minutes. Narita takes 60 to 90 minutes but serves more international routes.
Do I need cash in Tokyo?
Card acceptance has improved greatly, but smaller restaurants, shrines and some transport still require cash. Convenience store ATMs accept foreign cards.
How cold is early December?
Cold and dry, with daytime highs around ten to fourteen degrees Celsius and clear skies. Snow in central Tokyo is rare this early.
