Heidelberg in late April is a small city doing spring conspicuously well: blossom along the Neckar, the castle ruin above the old town, and a student population that has shaped the place for six centuries. The Altstadt is essentially one long pedestrian street with lanes running off it, so a Python conference here means short walks between venue, dinner and river rather than tram rides.
Frankfurt (FRA) is the practical arrival point, with direct trains to Mannheim in about half an hour and a short connection on to Heidelberg, totalling roughly an hour and a quarter. Stuttgart (STR) is a workable alternative. Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof sits west of the old town, ten minutes by tram or bus, and the centre itself is walkable end to end.

German mobile coverage is reliable in the Rhine-Neckar area, though rural stretches between towns can drop. Regional trains carry onboard Wi-Fi of variable quality, so an eSIM is worth having for the journey in as much as for the city. Heidelberg Castle. A part-ruined red sandstone complex on the hillside above the old town, reached by a steep path in twenty minutes or by funicular in three. Philosophenweg. A path along the north bank hillside, historically walked by university faculty, giving the classic side-on view of castle, bridge and old town together. The initial climb is genuinely steep. Best in late afternoon light, and roughly ninety minutes for the full loop across both bridges.
Alte Brucke and the Altstadt lanes. The eighteenth-century stone bridge anchors the eastern end of the old town, from where narrow lanes run back past student pubs, several centuries old, and small bookshops. It is an evening rather than a sightseeing item. An hour of unhurried wandering is about right.
Neckar valley riverside. A flat towpath heading upstream out of the city, quickly leaving buildings behind for wooded slopes and locks. Bicycles are easy to hire in the centre. It is the simplest way to get an hour of air between conference days without organising a trip.
Which airport should be booked?
Frankfurt is the natural choice, around seventy-five minutes door to door by train via Mannheim. Stuttgart works if fares are better.
What should be packed for late April?
Mild spring weather with cool evenings and a fair chance of showers. A light waterproof and shoes suitable for a steep cobbled climb to the castle.
Is public transport needed inside the city?
Rarely. The old town is compact and walkable; trams mainly matter for reaching the station and outlying districts.
