Gendarmenmarkt Christmas Market. The most architecturally striking of Berlin's winter markets, set between two matching cathedrals and a concert hall. Karl-Marx-Allee. A monumental socialist boulevard of tiled apartment blocks stretching two kilometres east, built as a showpiece of the GDR. Walking it end to end takes about an hour and gives a far better sense of divided Berlin than any single monument. Best in flat winter light.
