Utrecht in late May is the Netherlands at its most liveable: long light evenings, blossom giving way to full green, and terraces along the Oudegracht filling from mid-afternoon. RustWeek gets a host city compact enough to cross on foot in twenty minutes, far calmer than Amsterdam, and built around canals with sunken wharf cellars found nowhere else. Bring a light rain layer regardless of the forecast.
Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) is the practical arrival point, with direct trains to Utrecht Centraal every few minutes taking roughly 30-35 minutes. Eindhoven and Rotterdam also connect by rail. Utrecht Centraal sits directly beside the city centre, so most arrivals simply walk out and keep walking. Use an OV-chipkaart or tap a contactless card for regional transport.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Kiwitaxi. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on EconomyBookings.
Dutch 4G and 5G coverage is dense and reliable, including on the trains from Schiphol. A pre-loaded eSIM means you are online the moment you clear customs rather than once you reach the hotel. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Dom Tower climb. The tallest church tower in the Netherlands, and the climb is 465 steps up a spiral to a view across flat country toward Amsterdam on clear days. Guided ascent only, roughly an hour, and it books out, so reserve a slot before you travel rather than on the day. Tickets on Tiqets →
Oudegracht wharf cellars. Utrecht's signature: the canal runs a level below the street, with medieval cellars opening straight onto the water and now holding cafes and bars. Walk the lower quay rather than the street above. Best in the hour before sunset, when the west-facing side catches the light.
Rietveld Schroder House. A 1924 De Stijl house and UNESCO site on the city's eastern edge, still startling in its use of sliding partitions and primary colour. Small-group timed entry only, about an hour including the walk from the tram stop. Book ahead, because capacity is genuinely limited.
Museum Speelklok. Self-playing musical instruments, from street organs to automated orchestras, demonstrated live rather than displayed behind glass. More engaging than it sounds and a good rainy-afternoon option. Ninety minutes is plenty, and it sits centrally near the Dom. Tickets on Tiqets →
Should I rent a bike?
Yes if you are comfortable in traffic, since Utrecht has excellent separated infrastructure and rental shops near the station. The centre is also small enough to walk entirely.
What is the weather like in late May?
Highs around 17-21C with long daylight, but showers arrive without much warning. A packable rain jacket is the standard local answer.
Do I need to stay in Amsterdam?
No. Utrecht has its own hotel supply and the conference city is the better base; Amsterdam is a 25-minute train ride if you want a day there.
