Early April gives Pasadena warm dry afternoons in the low to mid twenties Celsius, jacaranda and citrus in bloom, and the San Gabriel mountains still holding snow on the skyline. The Pasadena Convention Center sits on Green Street, a few minutes from Old Pasadena's brick storefronts and within walking distance of the Metro. Four days of community-run open source content spread across co-located events makes an easy base worth having.
Hollywood Burbank (BUR) is the closest airport at roughly 20 to 30 minutes by car, and usually the least stressful. LAX is larger but 45 to 75 minutes away depending on traffic. The Metro A Line runs to Memorial Park and Del Mar stations, both a short walk from the convention center, and connects south into downtown Los Angeles in about 25 minutes.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Kiwitaxi. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on EconomyBookings.
Venue Wi-Fi at a community conference is generally decent but crowded during keynotes, and Los Angeles distances mean a lot of app-based navigation. Arranging an eSIM before you travel is the simplest way to keep ride-hailing and maps working without depending on the hall network. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Norton Simon Museum. A compact but exceptional collection covering European painting through to South Asian sculpture, ten minutes from the convention center. The scale is manageable in two hours, unlike the bigger Los Angeles institutions, and the sculpture garden at the back is modelled on Monet's pond. Closed Tuesdays.
The Huntington Library and Gardens. In neighbouring San Marino, 120 acres of themed gardens plus a rare book library and art collections. The Chinese and Japanese gardens peak in early April. Book timed entry in advance and give it most of a day; it is about fifteen minutes by car from Pasadena. Tickets on Go City →
Old Pasadena. Twenty walkable blocks of restored late-19th-century commercial buildings just north-west of the venue, with alleyways, independent shops and a dense run of restaurants. It is where most evening conference socialising ends up. Free to wander; allow an hour, or a whole evening.
Gamble House. The 1908 Greene and Greene house that defined American Arts and Crafts architecture, in teak, oak and stained glass. Interior access is by guided tour only and slots are limited, so reserve ahead. Around ninety minutes including the walk through the surrounding Arroyo neighbourhood.
Which airport should I use for Pasadena?
Hollywood Burbank (BUR) is closest at roughly 20 to 30 minutes by road and much quicker to clear than LAX, which is 45 to 75 minutes away depending on traffic.
Do I need a rental car?
Not for the conference itself. The Metro A Line stops within walking distance of the convention center and Old Pasadena is adjacent, but a car helps if you plan to range across greater Los Angeles.
What is the weather like in early April?
Warm and dry, with daytime highs usually in the low to mid twenties Celsius and cooler evenings. Rain is possible but uncommon by April; bring a light layer for after dark.
