Austin in mid-November is one of the better weeks of the Texan year, with warm afternoons, cool evenings and none of the summer heat that defines the city from June onward. An IT professional conference here lands in a town organised around live music, where the venue district and the bar strips are close enough to walk between. Two days is short, so the choice is usually between the river trail and Sixth Street.
Austin-Bergstrom International (AUS) sits around thirteen kilometres south-east of downtown, roughly twenty minutes by rideshare or taxi outside peak periods. The Capital Metro 20 bus runs the same route for a couple of dollars but takes closer to forty minutes. Downtown itself is walkable, and the MetroRail Red Line serves the northern suburbs rather than the core.

Texas State Capitol. The pink granite capitol is taller than the national one in Washington and free to enter, with self-guided access to the rotunda and grounds. Around forty-five minutes, and it sits at the north end of Congress Avenue within a fifteen-minute walk of downtown hotels.
Lady Bird Lake Hike-and-Bike Trail. A ten-mile loop along the Colorado River directly south of downtown, flat and well surfaced, with the skyline on one side and cypress trees on the other. Doing the shorter three-mile inner loop takes about an hour. Ideal before sessions start.
South Congress Avenue. The stretch of shops, food trailers and music venues immediately south of the river, reached on foot across the Congress Avenue bridge in fifteen minutes. Evenings are busiest. The bridge itself hosts a large bat colony, though most have departed by November.
Rainey Street. A row of converted bungalows now operating as bars and kitchens, on the eastern edge of downtown and the shortest walk from most conference hotels. It is compact, loud after dark and the standard destination for a group evening. An hour or a whole night.
What is the weather like in mid-November?
Comfortable, with daytime highs commonly in the low twenties Celsius and evenings dropping to around ten. A light jacket for the evening is usually enough.
Do I need a rental car?
Not for a downtown conference. Rideshare covers the airport run and most attractions are within walking distance of the centre.
How far is the airport from downtown?
About twenty minutes by car outside rush hour, or forty minutes on the Capital Metro 20 bus.
