Mid-November is arguably the best fortnight of the year to be in Tokyo. The summer humidity is long gone, skies are clear, and the ginkgo and maple colour peaks across the city's parks and avenues. A two-day testing conference leaves enough margin either side to see a genuinely different city in seasonal form. Distances are large but the rail network absorbs them, and almost everything runs precisely on schedule.
Haneda (HND) is far closer to the centre than Narita (NRT), with the Keikyu line or monorail reaching central Tokyo in around thirty minutes. From Narita, the Narita Express takes roughly an hour to Tokyo Station. Coverage is excellent everywhere including deep subway lines, though public wifi is less useful than travellers expect. Meiji Jingu Gaien ginkgo avenue. A short boulevard lined with around 150 ginkgo trees that turn uniformly gold in the second half of November, drawing large crowds at peak. Free and open, best on a weekday morning. Thirty to forty-five minutes, near Aoyama-itchome station.
Sensō-ji, Asakusa. Tokyo's oldest temple, approached through a covered market street of traditional stalls. Early morning before the tour groups arrive is a different experience entirely. Rikugien Garden. A restrained Edo-period strolling garden in northern Tokyo whose maples peak in late November, when evening illuminations are usually held. Considerably calmer than the famous parks. Allow ninety minutes including the walk from Komagome station.
Which airport is better for a short trip?
Haneda, if the fare difference is reasonable. It is around thirty minutes from central Tokyo compared with an hour or more from Narita.
Is cash still necessary in Tokyo?
Less than it once was, but small restaurants, shrines and some ticket machines remain cash-only. Carrying several thousand yen is prudent.
How cold is mid-November?
Mild, with daytime highs around fifteen degrees Celsius and evenings near eight. A light coat is sufficient.
