VLDB 2027 brings the international data management community to Athens from 23 to 27 August, at the height of the Greek summer. Expect hot, dry, sun-drenched days, often well above 30°C, softened at times by the northerly meltemi wind, and warm evenings made for late dinners outdoors. Late August is a quieter moment for the city itself, as many Athenians head to the islands, while ancient sites and rooftop terraces stay busy with visitors. Plan sightseeing around the heat: early mornings and evenings are the time to explore.
Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH) lies east of the city. The metro's airport branch reaches Syntagma in the centre in roughly 40 minutes, and express buses run around the clock to Syntagma and Piraeus. The suburban railway also serves the airport, and taxis take around 30 to 50 minutes depending on traffic. Check the conference site for the confirmed venue and plan the last leg by metro, tram or taxi from there.

Greek mobile networks offer good 4G and 5G coverage across Athens, and many cafés and hotels provide Wi-Fi. Setting up an eSIM before departure gives you data on arrival at ATH for maps, ride-hailing and metro planning in the heat. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Acropolis. The Parthenon and the surrounding monuments crown the city, and in late August the summit is exposed and very hot. Go right at opening or in the last hours before closing, carry water and wear a hat. Allow two to three hours including the climb, and book a timed ticket ahead. Tickets on Tiqets →
Acropolis Museum. At the foot of the hill, this modern museum displays sculptures from the Acropolis, with glass floors over excavated ancient streets and a top-floor gallery aligned with the Parthenon. It is air-conditioned and ideal for the hottest part of the day. Allow two hours; the café terrace has fine views. Tickets on Tiqets →
National Archaeological Museum. Greece's largest archaeological museum, in the Exarchia area, holds treasures spanning prehistory to late antiquity, including the Mask of Agamemnon and the Antikythera Mechanism, a fitting stop for a computing crowd. Allow at least three hours. It offers welcome shade on a summer afternoon. Tickets on Tiqets →
Temple of Poseidon at Sounion. The marble columns at Cape Sounion stand on a headland about 70 kilometres south of Athens along the coastal road. Sunset is the classic time to visit, when the heat has eased. Allow a half day including the drive, and consider a swim at a beach on the way. Tickets on Tiqets →
How do I get from Athens airport to the city centre?

How hot is Athens in late August?
Very hot, with daytime highs often above 30°C and little rain. Schedule outdoor sightseeing for early morning or evening, drink plenty of water and use sun protection.
