Potsdam sits immediately south-west of Berlin and could hardly be less like it: a former royal residence town of palaces, parkland and a preserved Dutch quarter, laid out at a human scale. A four-day testing conference here in mid-November catches the parks bare and quiet, with mist common over the lakes in the morning. The hybrid format means local attendees often commute in from Berlin, twenty-five minutes away by rail.
Berlin Brandenburg (BER) is the nearest airport, about forty minutes from Potsdam by regional train or half an hour by road. From central Berlin, the S7 suburban line and RE regional trains reach Potsdam Hauptbahnhof in twenty-five to forty minutes depending on service. Trams and buses connect the station with the palace district and the outer neighbourhoods within about fifteen minutes.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Kiwitaxi. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on Auto Europe.
Coverage across Potsdam and the rail corridor into Berlin is consistent. An eSIM organised before travelling means data works on arrival without needing to find a shop in a smaller town. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Sanssouci Park and Palace. Frederick the Great's summer residence above terraced vineyards, set in a park of nearly three square kilometres containing several further palaces. The grounds are free and open year-round; palace interiors are ticketed. Two to three hours, more if walking the full park. Tickets on Tiqets →
Dutch Quarter. Four blocks of red-brick gabled houses built in the 1730s for Dutch craftsmen, now filled with small shops and cafés. Compact and entirely walkable in forty-five minutes. It is at its most appealing on a cold afternoon when the cafés are the point.
Cecilienhof Palace. The mock-Tudor house in the New Garden where the 1945 Potsdam Conference was held, with the conference room preserved as it was. Historically weighty and modest in size. Ninety minutes including the lakeside walk out from the centre.
Filmmuseum Potsdam. A museum of German film history housed in a converted stable building, drawing on the archives of the nearby Babelsberg studios, the oldest large-scale film studio complex in the world. Around ninety minutes, in the centre near the old market.
Can I stay in Berlin and commute?
Yes. The S7 line and regional trains run frequently, taking twenty-five to forty minutes into Potsdam depending on which service and which Berlin station.
Are the palaces open in November?
The parks are open year-round. Palace interiors run reduced winter hours and some close on certain weekdays, so check before making the trip out.
Is one transport ticket enough for Berlin and Potsdam?
You need a ticket covering zones A, B and C. The standard AB ticket does not extend to Potsdam.
