January is Kathmandu's clearest month: cold mornings near freezing, dry sunny afternoons around 18C, and the best Himalayan visibility of the year once the haze of autumn has settled. The valley sits at roughly 1,400 metres, so days warm fast and nights bite. For an AI conference this is an unusual host city, and delegates who add a day either side get medieval temple squares and mountain views that no other tech destination offers.
Tribhuvan International (KTM) is the only international gateway and sits inside the city, about 30-45 minutes by taxi to Thamel or the main hotel districts depending on traffic. There is no rail link; prepaid taxi counters at arrivals are the simplest option and fix the price in advance. Within the valley, taxis and ride-hailing apps are the practical way to move; walking is fine in the old city core.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Kiwitaxi. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on EconomyBookings.
Nepali mobile data is inexpensive and covers the valley well, though speeds vary. A travel eSIM arranged before you fly avoids the registration paperwork attached to local SIM cards for foreign visitors. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Boudhanath Stupa. One of the largest stupas in the world and the centre of Tibetan Buddhist life in Nepal, ringed by monasteries and rooftop cafes. Join the kora circuit at dusk when butter lamps are lit and the crowd is entirely local. An hour and a half, about 20 minutes from the city centre.
Patan Durbar Square. The best preserved of the valley's three royal squares, a dense cluster of Newari palace courtyards and stone temples with a good museum inside the old palace. Quieter and more intact than Kathmandu's own square. Allow two hours; morning light is best for the brickwork.
Swayambhunath. The hilltop stupa above the city, reached by a long stair climb through resident macaques, with a full valley panorama from the top. Go at sunrise in January for clear mountain horizons. Ninety minutes including the climb; wear proper shoes for the steps.
Nagarkot viewpoint. A ridge village about 90 minutes east of the city, the standard day trip for Himalayan sunrise views including, on the clearest January mornings, Everest on the horizon. Either stay overnight or leave before dawn. A full half-day commitment and weather-dependent.
How cold is Kathmandu in January?
Cold mornings close to freezing, warming to around 18C in the afternoon sun, and dry throughout. Buildings are often unheated, so warm layers matter indoors as well as out.
Do I need a visa?
Most nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International, paying at kiosks in the terminal. Check your passport's eligibility and bring the fee in accepted currency.
Can I use cards for everything?
Larger hotels and restaurants take cards, but markets, taxis and smaller venues are cash-first. Carry Nepali rupees for day-to-day spending.
