Newcastle-upon-Tyne in late April is a compact northern city built in pale stone above a river gorge, with seven bridges stacked within sight of each other. Spring here is bracing rather than warm. The conference district sits close to a genuinely walkable centre: Grainger Town's classical streets on one side, the Quayside's bars and galleries down the bank on the other, and Gateshead directly across the water.
Newcastle International (NCL) is twenty-five minutes from the centre on the Tyne and Wear Metro, running directly from the terminal. Trains from London King's Cross take around three hours on the East Coast main line, arriving at Newcastle Central in the middle of town. The Metro plus walking covers almost everything; contactless payment works across the network.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Kiwitaxi. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on Auto Europe.
Coverage is dependable across Tyneside, including on the Metro above ground. Visitors from outside the UK will find an eSIM simpler than hunting for a pay-as-you-go SIM after landing, particularly for a short stay. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Quayside and the Tyne bridges. A riverside walk taking in the Tyne Bridge, the tilting Gateshead Millennium Bridge and the older Swing Bridge in a single stretch. Cross to the Gateshead bank for the best composition back towards the city. Sunday mornings bring a market along the quay. Allow an hour.
BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art. A converted flour mill on the south bank showing large-scale contemporary work, free to enter, with a top-floor viewing box over the river. Exhibitions rotate, so check what is showing rather than expecting a permanent collection. Ninety minutes including the viewing level.
Grainger Town and the Victorian arcades. The nineteenth-century commercial core, a grid of curved classical terraces centred on Grey Street, widely regarded as one of the finest streets in England. The covered Grainger Market nearby still runs as a working market hall. Best on a weekday morning; an hour to walk properly.
Tynemouth and the coast. Thirty minutes out on the Metro, a headland with a ruined priory and castle above a long sand beach. It is the standard local escape and feels a long way from the city. Wind off the North Sea is serious in April. Half a day. Tickets on Tiqets →
How do delegates reach the city from the airport?
The Metro runs directly from the terminal to the centre in about twenty-five minutes, which is faster and far cheaper than a taxi.
What is the weather like in late April?
Cool and changeable, with wind off the North Sea and frequent showers. A proper jacket is more useful than an umbrella on the coast.
Is Newcastle walkable?
Yes. The centre, Quayside and Gateshead bank are all within twenty minutes on foot, though the climb up from the river is steep.
