Paris in the first days of December has its Christmas lighting fully installed along the grands boulevards and the Champs-Elysees. An API conference here draws from across French and Southern European engineering, and the city's convention venues are generally well linked by metro. Days are short and often damp, which pushes the value firmly toward indoor culture and long lunches.
Charles de Gaulle (CDG) connects to central Paris by RER B in about 35 minutes, while Orly (ORY) links via the Orlyval and RER or the newer metro line 14 extension. The metro is dense, cheap and the only sensible way to move around. Eurostar and TGV services arrive at Gare du Nord and Gare de Lyon respectively, making rail competitive with flying from London, Brussels and Lyon.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Welcome Pickups. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on Auto Europe.
Metro tunnels now carry mobile coverage on most lines, though it remains patchy in places. An eSIM avoids roaming charges for non-EU attendees. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Musee d'Orsay. A converted Beaux-Arts railway station holding the world's principal collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painting. The upper-floor galleries and the great clock face are the highlights. Two to three hours, and late-opening Thursday evenings are noticeably calmer. Tickets on Tiqets →
Sainte-Chapelle. A thirteenth-century royal chapel whose upper level is essentially a cage of stained glass, fifteen windows telling over a thousand biblical scenes. Overcast December light is less dramatic but the crowds are far thinner. Forty-five minutes, and security queues can be long. Tickets on Tiqets →
Le Marais. A historic quarter that escaped Haussmann's demolitions, leaving narrow medieval streets, seventeenth-century mansions and Place des Vosges. It is the most rewarding district in Paris to walk without a plan. Two hours, and Sunday is unusually lively here.
Musee des Arts et Metiers. A museum of industrial and scientific instruments housed partly in a deconsecrated priory, with Foucault's pendulum and early computing machinery. Consistently overlooked by visitors. Ninety minutes, and it is directly on metro line 3. Tickets on Tiqets →
What is the fastest route from CDG?
RER B runs to Chatelet-Les Halles in around 35 minutes. Taxis have a fixed flat fare to central Paris but take longer in traffic.
Is a museum pass worthwhile?
Only for a dense sightseeing schedule. For two or three sites, individual timed tickets booked online are usually simpler and cheaper.
How cold is early December?
Cool and damp rather than freezing, typically between four and nine degrees Celsius, with frequent light rain. An umbrella earns its place.
