Utah's information security community meets on 6 and 7 May 2027 for BSidesSLC 2027, a grassroots conference in the Security BSides tradition. The event serves security practitioners, IT professionals, developers, students and hobbyists from across the Salt Lake Valley and beyond, offering a programme shaped by the community rather than by vendors. This edition is held at the Conference Center at Miller Campus in Sandy, just south of Salt Lake City. The two-day schedule combines talks, workshops and competitions, giving the event a more interactive character than a talks-only format. With the Wasatch Front's technology sector continuing to expand, this cybersecurity conference near Salt Lake City in 2027 gives the region's security workforce a dedicated local venue. Attendees can learn from community presentations, build practical skills in workshops, and put their knowledge to the test in competitive challenges. Competitions in particular offer a hands-on way to learn and a natural opportunity to collaborate with strangers who quickly become teammates. Between sessions, the event provides plenty of space to network with employers and peers. For Utah's security community, BSidesSLC is an important annual gathering that combines learning, play and professional connection in one accessible event.

BSidesSLC takes place on 6 and 7 May at the Conference Center at Salt Lake Community College's Miller Campus in Sandy, a suburb about 30 km south of downtown Salt Lake City. The Wasatch Range rises almost directly behind it, and the mouths of Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons are a short drive away. Early May is a transition month: the valley floor is green and warm, while the high ski areas may still be holding on to late-season snow, so pack hiking boots and sunglasses together.
Salt Lake City International (SLC) is about 35 km north of Sandy, roughly a 30 to 40 minute drive via the interstate. The TRAX light rail runs from the airport to downtown, where you can transfer south toward Sandy, though the full trip takes over an hour. Given the spread-out suburbs and canyon access, a rental car is the most practical choice for most attendees.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Kiwitaxi. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on EconomyBookings.

Coverage is strong across the Salt Lake Valley but thins out quickly in the canyons. A US eSIM gives international visitors reliable data without roaming bills. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Little Cottonwood Canyon. A granite canyon starting minutes from Sandy, home to the Snowbird and Alta ski areas. Snowbird has often run spring skiing into May in strong snow years, so check operating dates. Otherwise, lower trails offer waterfalls fed by snowmelt. Plan a half-day, and watch for canyon road restrictions.
Loveland Living Planet Aquarium. In neighbouring Draper, about ten minutes from the Miller Campus, this aquarium covers ocean and freshwater habitats, with sharks, penguins and a rainforest exhibit. It suits an evening after sessions or a rainy spring morning, and works well for attendees travelling with family. Allow about two hours, and buy entry ahead on weekends. Tickets on Tiqets →
Red Butte Garden. A botanical garden in the foothills by the University of Utah, about forty minutes north. Early May is tulip and spring flowering season, with mountain views from the trails. Combine it with the nearby Natural History Museum of Utah; allow three hours for both.
Do I need a car for BSidesSLC?
Strongly recommended. Sandy is spread out, and transit connections to the airport and canyons are slow.
What is the weather like in early May?
Valley days are usually 17 to 24°C and sunny, while mountain areas can still see snow. The air is dry and the altitude intensifies sunburn.
Are there unusual alcohol rules in Utah?
Utah has stricter alcohol laws than most states, and beer strength in grocery stores is limited. Restaurants and bars serve drinks, but often with food or within specific hours.
