Gdynia is the youngest of the three cities that make up Poland's Tricity, built almost entirely in the twentieth century as a modernist port, and it looks nothing like the older Baltic towns beside it. A three-day conference here in mid-November catches the coast at its bleakest and most atmospheric, with a cold sea wind and very short days. Gdańsk and Sopot are both minutes away by commuter train.
Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport (GDN) is the regional gateway, about thirty kilometres from Gdynia, reached by the PKM rail link or by road in roughly forty minutes. The SKM commuter train ties Gdynia, Sopot and Gdańsk together with departures every ten to fifteen minutes and journeys of under half an hour end to end. Long-distance trains from Warsaw take under three hours to Gdynia Główna.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Kiwitaxi. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on Auto Europe.
Polish mobile networks are fast and inexpensive, with full coverage across the Tricity corridor. An eSIM arranged before departure is the easiest option for visitors who would otherwise face roaming charges. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Emigration Museum. Housed in the former marine station from which Poles departed for the Americas, this museum traces two centuries of emigration through personal documents and reconstructed ship interiors. Genuinely well designed. Around two hours, on the waterfront a short walk from the centre.
Dar Pomorza and ORP Błyskawica. A preserved sail training ship and a Second World War destroyer moored side by side on the main pier, both open to walk through. Together they take about ninety minutes. Wrap up, as much of the visit is on exposed deck in Baltic wind.
Sopot pier. The longest wooden pier in Europe stretches half a kilometre into the Baltic from the neighbouring spa town, ten minutes away by SKM train. It is ticketed in season and quiet in November. An hour including the walk from the station.
Gdańsk Main Town. The reconstructed Hanseatic core of Gdańsk, with its long market street and riverside crane, is twenty-five minutes away by commuter train. It absorbs a full afternoon and is the historic counterweight to modernist Gdynia. Go before dark. Tickets on Tiqets →
How do I move between the Tricity cities?
The SKM commuter rail line connects Gdynia, Sopot and Gdańsk every ten to fifteen minutes. Tickets are cheap and bought at station machines before boarding.
What is the weather like on the Baltic coast in November?
Cold, windy and often wet, with highs around five degrees Celsius. A windproof coat matters more than an umbrella near the water.
Is Polish currency needed?
Poland uses the złoty, not the euro. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but a small amount of cash is useful for kiosks and some transit machines.
