Munich turns properly wintry by the end of November, and the Christmas markets on Marienplatz will be running throughout a conference spanning into early December. Bavaria's capital combines a well-preserved historic core with a serious engineering economy — automotive, aerospace and increasingly cloud infrastructure. Beer halls remain a genuine institution rather than a tourist artefact, which makes organising an evening straightforward.
Munich Airport (MUC) connects to the centre by S-Bahn lines S1 and S8 in about 40 minutes, or the Lufthansa Express Bus in similar time. The city's U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram and bus network operates on one integrated fare zone system, and day or multi-day tickets are good value. Munich Hauptbahnhof handles fast ICE services from across Germany and direct trains to Austria and Switzerland.

Underground transit coverage is reliable but venue networks strain during large technical events. An eSIM gives an independent connection. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Marienplatz Christmas Market. Munich's central market sits beneath the New Town Hall's neo-Gothic facade, with the Glockenspiel performing daily at eleven. Gluhwein served in deposit mugs is the local custom. An hour or two in the evening, and it is exceptionally crowded on weekends.
Deutsches Museum. One of the largest science and technology museums anywhere, covering mining, aeronautics, computing and physics across an island site in the Isar. Genuinely enormous — three hours only scratches the surface. Pick two or three departments rather than attempting everything. Tickets on Tiqets →
BMW Welt and Museum. A delivery centre and museum complex next to the Olympic Park, tracing a century of vehicle and engine design. BMW Welt entry is free; the museum is ticketed. Two hours combined, and it is directly served by the U3 underground line. Tickets on Tiqets →
Englischer Garten. A park larger than Central Park, with a standing river wave at the Eisbach where surfers ride year-round, including in winter. Watching them in near-freezing water is a peculiar local spectacle. An hour, entering from the southern end near the city centre.
How long is the transfer from Munich Airport?
About 40 minutes by S-Bahn to the city centre. Trains run every ten minutes across two lines.
Will Christmas markets be open?
Yes. Munich's markets typically open in the final week of November and run until Christmas Eve.
Is public transport ticketing complicated?
The zone system takes a moment to understand, but a multi-day inner-zone pass covers essentially everything a conference visitor needs.
