Security professionals gathering in Munich at the turn of December land in a city with a substantial defence, aerospace and industrial control presence, alongside two major universities. The winter setting is austere and handsome: bare plane trees, frost on the Isar, and long indoor evenings. Schwabing and Maxvorstadt, north of the old town, offer a quieter base than the tourist-heavy central squares.
S-Bahn services S1 and S8 link Munich Airport (MUC) to the Hauptbahnhof and Marienplatz in roughly 40 minutes, running throughout the day and much of the night. Within the city, trams are often the most pleasant option for short distances, and the U-Bahn is fast and frequent. Munich also has excellent onward rail links to Nuremberg, Salzburg and Zurich if extending the trip.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Welcome Pickups. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on Auto Europe.
Practitioners wary of open venue wifi tend to prefer their own connection. An eSIM provides that without depending on conference infrastructure. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Residenz Munich. The former royal palace of the Bavarian rulers, a sprawling complex of state rooms, a treasury of regalia and a remarkable shell-encrusted grotto courtyard. Substantially rebuilt post-war. Allow two hours for the palace rooms alone, and note the treasury requires a separate ticket. Tickets on Tiqets →
Pinakothek der Moderne. Four collections under one roof covering art, graphics, architecture and industrial design, the last of which is unusually strong on twentieth-century product engineering. Around two hours. It sits within the Kunstareal museum quarter, so pairing with a neighbouring gallery is easy. Tickets on Tiqets →
Viktualienmarkt. A permanent open-air food market operating since 1807, selling cheese, charcuterie, spices and produce, with a covered beer garden at its centre. Best visited late morning for lunch. Forty-five minutes, and it is a short walk south of Marienplatz.
Nymphenburg Palace. A baroque summer palace west of the centre, with a long canal frontage and extensive grounds that freeze over in hard winters. The Gallery of Beauties is the best-known interior. Two hours including the park, reached by tram from the city centre. Tickets on Tiqets →
Which district is best to stay in?
Maxvorstadt and Schwabing offer good transport links and a quieter atmosphere than the immediate city centre, with plenty of restaurants.
How cold does Munich get in early December?
Around or slightly below freezing, with a reasonable chance of snow given the proximity to the Alps. Warm layers are essential.
Can I visit the Alps on a free day?
Yes. Direct trains reach Garmisch-Partenkirchen in about ninety minutes, making a day trip into the mountains realistic.
