Nullcon puts a security research audience in Berlin for five days in early November, and few cities suit that better. This is a place with a documented institutional memory of surveillance, where the archives of a collapsed secret police force are a public museum and the hacker scene has been continuous since the 1980s. November is dark by half past four and cold, which concentrates everything into interiors: Kreuzberg bars, Mitte galleries, and long conversations that outlast the schedule.
Berlin Brandenburg (BER) is south-east of the city; the FEX express, RE7 and RB14 regional trains and the S9 all serve it, reaching the Hauptbahnhof in about 30 to 40 minutes. The journey crosses into fare zone C, so an ABC ticket is required. Long-distance trains connect Hamburg in under two hours and Munich in about four.

Stasi Museum. The former Ministry for State Security headquarters in Lichtenberg preserves the minister's office suite and displays the bugging equipment, disguises and file systems of a surveillance state. For anyone working in security it is the most relevant museum in Europe. Allow two hours; the U5 stops nearby.
East Side Gallery. The longest surviving stretch of the Berlin Wall runs 1.3 kilometres along the Spree in Friedrichshain, painted by artists in 1990 and repeatedly restored since. Walking it takes about forty minutes, and the Oberbaumbrücke at the eastern end crosses into Kreuzberg for dinner afterwards.
Museum Island. Five state museums share an island in the Spree, holding antiquities, Egyptian collections including the Nefertiti bust, and nineteenth-century European painting. Tempelhofer Feld. A closed inner-city airport left as open ground, with runways now used by cyclists, kite-buggies and urban gardeners. The scale of it is the point, and November wind across the apron is genuinely bracing. The U6 and U8 both reach its edges; an hour is enough.
Which transport ticket is needed from the airport?
An AB ticket covers the city itself, but BER lies in zone C, so an ABC ticket is required for the airport journey. Day and weekly passes exist in both variants.
How cold and dark does it get?
Highs around 6 to 8°C, sunset shortly after half past four, and frequent grey drizzle. Layers and a warm coat matter, as does accepting that outdoor sightseeing ends early.
Is cash still needed?
More than in most European capitals. Card acceptance has improved but many bars, imbiss stands and small restaurants remain cash-only, so carrying notes avoids problems.
