Rotterdam is the outlier among Dutch cities: bombed flat in 1940 and rebuilt with an appetite for modern architecture that no other place in the country matched. Late September brings cool maritime weather around seventeen degrees with wind off the Maas. Open-source communities tend to appreciate the pragmatism here — everything is functional, the port is still the largest in Europe, and the city centre is small enough to cross on foot in half an hour.
Most international arrivals land at Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) and take a direct intercity train to Rotterdam Centraal, a journey of about twenty-five minutes on the high-speed service or forty on the regular line. Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTM) handles a smaller European network and sits eight kilometres north, roughly twenty minutes by bus 33. Eurostar and Thalys services also stop at Rotterdam Centraal.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Kiwitaxi. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on Auto Europe.
The Netherlands has dense 5G coverage and reliable service on trains and the metro. Loading a data eSIM before departure means arriving with a working connection rather than hunting for the station WiFi login. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Markthal and the Cube Houses. Two of the city's signature buildings stand a block apart near Blaak station: a horseshoe-shaped market hall with a painted interior vault, and Piet Blom's tilted cube dwellings from the 1980s. One cube is open as a show house. Together they take under ninety minutes and explain the city's design instincts.
Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen. The mirrored bowl next to Museumpark is the world's first publicly accessible art storage facility, showing the whole collection in racks rather than curated galleries. The rooftop restaurant is open to ticket holders. Booking ahead is sensible, and two hours covers the storage floors comfortably. Tickets on Tiqets →
Erasmus Bridge and the Kop van Zuid. The white cable-stayed bridge crosses to the redeveloped southern docks, where warehouse conversions sit under the Rotterdam building. Walking over takes ten minutes and the view back toward the skyline is the best in the city. Water taxis also run this crossing and cost little more than a tram fare.
Kinderdijk windmills. A UNESCO site of nineteen eighteenth-century drainage mills about fifteen kilometres east, reachable by waterbus in roughly half an hour. Two mills are open as museums. Autumn light over the polder canals is the reason to make the trip; allow half a day including travel. Tickets on Tiqets →
Should I fly into Amsterdam or Rotterdam?
Schiphol has far more routes and connects to Rotterdam Centraal by direct train in twenty-five to forty minutes. Rotterdam The Hague Airport is closer but serves a limited European network.
Is Rotterdam walkable?
The centre is compact and flat, and the metro plus tram network covers everything else. Cycling is also straightforward, with rental options at Centraal station.
What weather should I expect?
Highs near fifteen to eighteen degrees Celsius, frequent wind and a genuine chance of rain. A windproof waterproof layer is more useful than an umbrella.
