Five days in Düsseldorf in late October gives room to see a city often passed over for Cologne, half an hour south. The Rhine waterfront promenade, the reconstructed Altstadt and the striking Gehry buildings of the MedienHafen sit within a walkable strip. Autumn is cool and damp, but the Altstadt's famously dense concentration of brewery taverns provides an entirely adequate response.
Düsseldorf Airport (DUS) connects to the main station by S-Bahn in around 15 minutes, one of the shortest airport transfers in Germany. Cologne/Bonn (CGN) is an alternative roughly 45 minutes away. The Hauptbahnhof sits on the high-speed network with frequent ICE services across the country. Within the city, U-Bahn, trams and buses cover everything, and the central districts are walkable.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Kiwitaxi. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on Auto Europe.
German mobile coverage across Düsseldorf and the Rhine-Ruhr region is strong, including on the airport S-Bahn. An eSIM arranged before travelling avoids the identity registration required for German prepaid SIMs, which is awkward on arrival. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Altstadt breweries. The old town is known for Altbier, a dark top-fermented beer served in small glasses and replaced automatically until you signal otherwise. Uerige and Schumacher are the traditional houses. Compact enough to visit several in an evening on foot.
MedienHafen. The former docks rebuilt with Frank Gehry's deformed towers alongside other contemporary architecture, a twenty-minute walk south along the Rhine from the Altstadt. Best in late afternoon light. An hour, with restaurants for an evening extension.
Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen. Split across two central buildings, K20 and K21, covering classical modernism and contemporary art respectively. K21's suspended net installation beneath the glass dome is the memorable element. Allow two hours for one building. Tickets on Tiqets →
Cologne day trip. Regional trains reach Cologne in under 30 minutes, putting the Gothic cathedral and the Roman-Germanic Museum within easy reach. A half-day is enough for the cathedral, a climb of its tower and the riverside. Trains run several times an hour.
How far is the airport from the city?
Düsseldorf Airport connects to the main station by S-Bahn in around 15 minutes, making it one of Germany's most convenient airport transfers.
Can I visit Cologne easily?
Yes. Regional trains take under 30 minutes and run several times an hour, so a half-day trip is entirely practical.
What is the weather like in late October?
Cool and often damp, with daytime temperatures around ten degrees Celsius and early darkness. A waterproof jacket is worth packing.
