Web Summit Vancouver runs four days in late May at the Vancouver Convention Centre, whose West Building sits on the harbour under a six-acre living roof with the North Shore mountains directly across the water. Late May is the start of the dry season here, when the rain relents and daylight stretches past nine in the evening. Few large tech conferences put you this close to both a working port and a temperate rainforest.
Vancouver International (YVR) connects to downtown by the Canada Line SkyTrain in about 25 minutes, arriving at Waterfront station a short walk from the convention centre. SkyTrain, SeaBus and buses run on one integrated Compass system that accepts contactless bank cards. Amtrak and Via Rail serve Pacific Central station, and cross-border coaches run from Seattle in roughly four hours including the border.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Welcome Pickups. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on EconomyBookings.
Downtown Wi-Fi and cellular coverage are both strong. Roaming into Canada is costly from most countries, so an eSIM activated before you cross the border is the sensible option for a multi-day stay. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Stanley Park seawall. A ten-kilometre paved path circling a forested peninsula immediately west of downtown, with the harbour on one side and old-growth cedar on the other. Walking the full loop takes about three hours, cycling roughly one. The entrance is a fifteen-minute walk from the convention centre, which makes it the easiest morning before sessions.
Granville Island. A former industrial spit under the Granville Bridge, now a public market of produce and seafood stalls surrounded by studios and theatres. The small ferries across False Creek from downtown are part of the appeal. Two to three hours, and the market is at its best before midday.
Grouse Mountain. Across the harbour in North Vancouver, reached by SeaBus and bus, with an aerial tramway climbing to alpine terrain and a full view back over the city and the Strait of Georgia. Late May usually has snow still lying at the summit. Half a day including travel. Tickets on Tiqets →
Gastown. The oldest quarter of the city, on cobbled streets between the convention centre and Chinatown, with brick warehouses converted to restaurants and design shops. It is the closest evening district to the venue and works well for dinner after a conference day. An hour or two.
How do I get from YVR to downtown?
The Canada Line SkyTrain runs from the airport to Waterfront station in about 25 minutes and is the fastest option. Tap through with a contactless card; an airport surcharge applies on departure from YVR.
What is the weather like in late May?
Mild and increasingly dry as the season turns, typically in the high teens Celsius with long evenings. Rain is still possible, so bring a light shell.
Do I need a car in Vancouver?
No. Downtown is walkable, SkyTrain and SeaBus cover the wider region, and parking is expensive. A car only helps for trips beyond the metro area.
