Copenhagen in May is a city that has organised itself around bicycles and daylight, both of which arrive in quantity that month. A software testing conference here means flat streets, harbour water clean enough to swim in, and a design culture visible in ordinary street furniture rather than only in museums. The centre is small; the interesting parts spread across Norrebro, Vesterbro and the harbour islands.
Copenhagen Airport (CPH) connects to the central station in about thirteen minutes by metro or train, one of the fastest airport transfers in Europe. The driverless M1 and M2 metro lines run around the clock. Cycling is the default local mode, with hire schemes and hotel bicycles widely available, and the network of separated lanes makes it genuinely practical for visitors.

Danish networks are fast and coverage is comprehensive, including in the metro tunnels. EU and EEA visitors roam without surcharge; travellers from further afield will find an eSIM cheaper than Danish prepaid options for a short stay. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Nyhavn and the harbour circuit. The seventeenth-century canal of painted merchant houses is the postcard, but the better use of an hour is the harbour walk north past the opera house and across the pedestrian bridges. Electric harbour buses count as public transport and cost a normal fare. Ninety minutes. Tickets on Tiqets →
Christiania. A self-governing community established in 1971 on a former military site, with self-built housing, workshops and a firm no-photography rule in certain areas. It is genuinely unlike anywhere else in northern Europe and warrants being treated as a neighbourhood, not an attraction. Ninety minutes.
Refshaleoen. A disused shipyard across the harbour now holding street food halls, galleries and a harbour sauna, reached by harbour bus in fifteen minutes. It is where the city's newer food culture concentrates. Best in the evening while the May light holds. Two to three hours.
Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. Forty minutes north by train along the coast, a modernist gallery built into a sloping park above the Oresund with a sculpture garden facing Sweden. The building itself is the reason to go. Combine with the coastal walk from the station. A half day. Tickets on Tiqets →
How long is the transfer from the airport?
About thirteen minutes to the central station by metro or train, running frequently through the day and night.
Is cycling realistic for a visitor?
Yes. Separated lanes are extensive and hire bicycles are easy to find. Signal turns by hand and keep right to let faster commuters pass.
What is the weather like in mid-May?
Cool to mild with very long daylight hours, and wind off the water is common. A jacket is needed in the evening even on warm days.
