Marburg is a small Hessian university town built up a steep hillside above the Lahn, with a castle on top and a medieval upper town below it. It is an unusual setting for a two-day security conference and a deliberate one: everything is within walking distance, there is no city-scale distraction, and late September in the Lahn valley is mild and green.
Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is the natural gateway, with regional trains reaching Marburg in roughly an hour and a half via Frankfurt or Giessen. Deutsche Bahn intercity services also connect from Kassel and the Ruhr. Marburg itself is compact enough to cross on foot, though the climb from the station to the upper town is genuinely steep — a public lift and staircases connect the levels.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Kiwitaxi. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on Auto Europe.
German mobile coverage in the Lahn valley is adequate but weaker than in the major cities, and thins on the surrounding hills. An eSIM sorted before travel spares non-EU attendees a roaming bill for a short two-day visit. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Marburg Castle. The Landgrave's castle crowns the hill above the town, with a museum of cultural history and a terrace looking down the Lahn valley. The walk up through the Oberstadt lanes is the point as much as the destination; allow ninety minutes for both.
Elisabethkirche. One of the earliest purely Gothic churches in Germany, completed in the thirteenth century over the grave of Elisabeth of Hungary. It stands near the station end of town, is free to enter outside services, and repays half an hour of attention.
Oberstadt. The half-timbered upper town, reached by stairs or the public lift from the market square, holds the town hall, small bookshops and student pubs. It is where the evening happens in Marburg and is entirely walkable from any conference hotel.
Lahn riverside path. A flat towpath running along the river below the old town, used by walkers and cyclists and lined with beer gardens in the warmer months. It is the easiest way to clear your head between sessions, needing only twenty or thirty minutes.
How do I get to Marburg from Frankfurt Airport?
Regional trains take about ninety minutes, usually with a change at Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof or Giessen. No car is needed.
Is Marburg walkable?
Yes, but it is built on a hillside. The upper town involves steep stairs, though a public lift connects the levels for anyone who prefers to avoid them.
Is the conference in German?
heise devSec is a German-language security event, so expect talks in German. Check the programme if you require English sessions.
