IEEE ICTAI meets in Boca Raton in early November, at the point where South Florida becomes genuinely pleasant: humidity drops, hurricane season is closing, and afternoons settle in the high twenties. This is a low-rise, planned coastal city of Mediterranean-revival architecture, mangrove inlets and long public beaches, sitting between Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. It is quiet, spread out, and organised around driving rather than walking.
Fort Lauderdale (FLL) is about 40 kilometres south, 30 to 40 minutes by road; Palm Beach (PBI) is a similar distance north and often cheaper for domestic connections; Miami (MIA) is an hour or more. Tri-Rail commuter trains stop at Boca Raton, and Brightline serves Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach with a short onward transfer.

Gumbo Limbo Nature Center. A boardwalk through coastal hammock and mangrove leads to sea-turtle rehabilitation tanks and a research aquarium, all a short drive from the conference district. Entry is by donation, the trail takes under an hour, and early morning is when the wading birds are most active.
Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. Six gardens in different historical Japanese styles surround a museum documenting the Yamato colony of Japanese farmers who settled this part of Florida a century ago. Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. The northern remnant of the Everglades begins half an hour west, with a cypress boardwalk, marsh trails and canoe routes. Alligators and wading birds are near-guaranteed in the cooler months. Bring insect repellent and go early; there is no public transport, so a car is required.
Atlantic Avenue, Delray Beach. The most walkable stretch in the area runs from the Intracoastal Waterway to the ocean, lined with restaurants, galleries and bars that stay busy on weekday evenings. Fifteen minutes north by car, it is where conference dinners tend to end up for want of a comparable option closer.
Is a rental car necessary?
Effectively yes. South Florida outside the downtown cores is built for driving, transit between towns is limited, and the nature sites have no bus service. Ride-hailing works but adds up over several days.
Is early November still hurricane season?
The Atlantic season officially runs to 30 November, but activity drops sharply by then and direct impacts in early November are uncommon. Travel insurance covering weather disruption remains sensible.
What is the weather like?
