Valencia in March is warm, bright and building toward Las Fallas, the fire festival that takes over the city in the middle of the month with enormous satirical sculptures and daily pyrotechnics. The conference coincides with that build-up, which transforms the atmosphere of the entire centre. The city is flat, cycle-friendly and organised around the diverted riverbed that now runs through it as a nine-kilometre park.
Valencia Airport (VLC) is close, roughly 20-25 minutes from the centre by Metro lines 3 and 5 or a similar time by taxi. High-speed AVE trains reach Madrid in under two hours, making rail a genuine alternative to flying from within Spain. In the city, the Metro, trams and an extensive bike-share network cover most distances, and the historic centre is walkable throughout.

Connectivity in Valencia's hotels and conference venues is reliable. During Fallas the centre becomes extremely crowded and mobile networks can slow considerably. Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències. Santiago Calatrava's white concrete complex in the former riverbed, holding a science museum, Europe's largest aquarium and an opera house. Turia Gardens. The old river channel, rerouted after a catastrophic flood and converted into a continuous park crossing the whole city beneath its historic bridges. Renting a bicycle is the natural way to cover it. Two hours end to end, and it links the old town to the arts complex directly.

Mercat Central. One of Europe's largest working food markets under a Modernista iron and tile roof, with almost a thousand stalls of Valencian produce and seafood. Mornings only. An hour, and it is the right place to understand what goes into a paella before eating one.
