The festival spreads across Nuremberg for eleven days in mid-June, running in venues scattered through the city rather than a single hall - which means the walk between sessions is part of the programme. Franconia in June is warm and long-lit, around 23C, with the old town's sandstone and half-timbering at its best. The Altstadt is compact and encircled by intact medieval walls, so most festival locations are within twenty minutes of each other on foot.
Nuremberg Airport (NUE) sits unusually close to the centre - the U2 U-Bahn runs from the terminal to the Hauptbahnhof in about 12 minutes. Munich (MUC) is the larger hub, with ICE trains reaching Nuremberg in roughly 70 minutes, and Frankfurt is around two hours by rail. Within the city the U-Bahn, trams and a very walkable old town cover everything; a day ticket is usually better value than singles.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Kiwitaxi. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on Auto Europe.
German networks cover the city well and festival venues generally offer wifi. An eSIM arranged before travel is the simplest route for non-EU delegates, who do not benefit from EU roaming rules. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Kaiserburg. The imperial castle on the sandstone ridge above the old town, with the Sinwell Tower, the deep well and a view across the rooftops. Twenty minutes uphill from the centre and the obvious orientation point on a first evening. Ninety minutes including the tower climb. Tickets on Tiqets →
Documentation Centre Nazi Party Rally Grounds. The museum built into Speer's unfinished congress hall, covering the rallies and the regime's use of the city, followed by the grounds themselves at Zeppelinfeld. Sober and thoroughly done. Allow three hours including the walk; it is a tram ride southeast of the centre.
Albrecht Durer's House. The artist's half-timbered home near the castle, restored with period workshops and printing demonstrations. Small, specific and quickly seen. An hour, and it combines naturally with the castle on the same climb through the upper town. Tickets on Tiqets →
Altstadt and Handwerkerhof. The walled old town itself - Hauptmarkt, the Schoner Brunnen fountain, the Pegnitz bridges and the craftsmen's courtyard by the Konigstor. Best simply walked in the long June evening, with a stop for Nuremberg bratwurst. Two hours at an unhurried pace.
How do I get in from the airport?
The U2 U-Bahn line runs from Nuremberg Airport to the Hauptbahnhof in about 12 minutes, one of the shortest airport transfers in Germany.
Is the festival in one venue?
No - it runs across many locations in the city over eleven days. The old town is compact enough that most are within a twenty-minute walk or a short tram ride.
What is the weather like in mid-June?
Warm and long-lit, around 23C, with daylight until roughly 21:30. Occasional summer thunderstorms are possible.
