Delegates arriving for three days of robotics and autonomous-systems research land in a city that runs much of its own infrastructure on the same ideas — driverless shuttles on trial estates, port automation, sensor-dense public housing. Early June sits between monsoons: expect 26-32C, heavy humidity and short violent afternoon downpours that clear by evening. Air-conditioned walkways link most central districts, so a soaked shirt is optional rather than inevitable.
Changi Airport (SIN) handles nearly every long-haul carrier and sits at the eastern end of the island. The MRT East West Line runs from Changi with a same-platform change at Tanah Merah, reaching the central business district in roughly 45 minutes for a couple of dollars. Taxis and ride-hailing cars take 20-30 minutes to the city outside peak hours. Airport shuttle buses serve most central hotels.

Public Wi-Fi is widespread and reliable across malls, transit stations and campuses, but conference venues get congested once several hundred laptops appear. A prepaid data eSIM activated before landing keeps navigation, ride-hailing and paper uploads working from the moment the plane doors open. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Science Centre Singapore. A short ride west to Jurong East, this is the obvious detour for an autonomous-systems audience: permanent halls on mechanics, energy and computing plus rotating engineering exhibits aimed squarely at how machines sense and move. Allow two to three hours. Weekday mornings are quiet before the school groups arrive. Tickets on Klook →
Singapore Botanic Gardens. A UNESCO World Heritage site spanning more than 80 hectares along Holland Road, free to enter apart from the orchid garden. Go at opening, around sunrise, when the heat is still tolerable and the birdlife is active. An hour of loop paths makes a workable substitute for a hotel treadmill between sessions.
Gardens by the Bay. The Supertree grove and two cooled conservatories sit beside Marina Bay, walkable from the CBD hotels. The Cloud Forest dome is genuinely cold, which after a humid June afternoon is the point. Evening light shows run twice nightly and are free; the conservatories are ticketed and best booked ahead. Kampong Glam and Haji Lane. The historic Malay-Arab quarter around Sultan Mosque, ten minutes by MRT from most central hotels. Low shophouses, textile merchants and a dense strip of small cafes and bars make it the easiest place to take a group after the closing session. Best from late afternoon once the worst heat breaks.
How do I get from Changi Airport to the conference area?
The MRT East West Line connects Changi to the city centre in about 45 minutes with one change at Tanah Merah. Taxis and ride-hailing take 20-30 minutes and run around the clock, which matters for the many long-haul flights landing after midnight.
Do I need a car in Singapore?
No. The island is small and the MRT and bus network covers essentially every district a delegate would visit. Car ownership is deliberately expensive here, and traffic in the central business district is subject to electronic road pricing, so visitors are better served by transit and ride-hailing.
What is the weather like in June, and what should I pack?
June is hot and very humid, typically 26-32C, with brief heavy thunderstorms most afternoons. Pack light breathable clothing and a compact umbrella, but bring a layer for indoors — conference halls, malls and the MRT are aggressively air-conditioned.
Will my cards work, and do I need cash?
Contactless payment is near-universal, and a contactless bank card or phone can be tapped directly at MRT and bus gates without buying a separate transit card. Small hawker stalls may still prefer cash or local QR payment, so carrying modest Singapore dollars is sensible.
