Prenzlauer Berg and Friedrichshain, north and east of Berlin's centre, are where the city's web development scene has clustered for two decades. By mid-October the courtyards and tree-lined streets have turned, and the outdoor tables are gone. Mauerpark flea market. A Sunday market on former death-strip land between Prenzlauer Berg and Wedding, with an open-air karaoke session in the amphitheatre through the afternoon. Two to three hours on a Sunday. Other days it is simply a park, still worth crossing for the remaining Wall segment along its western edge.
Computerspielemuseum. A computer games museum on Karl-Marx-Allee in Friedrichshain, tracing arcade and home computing history with a large collection of playable machines. Ninety minutes covers it. For a developer audience it is a more relevant stop than most Berlin museums, and it is rarely busy on weekday afternoons.
Volkspark Friedrichshain. Berlin's oldest public park, with two hills built from wartime rubble, a fairy-tale fountain, and running paths through mature trees. An hour covers a circuit to the higher summit and back. October colour is at its best here in the middle weeks of the month.
Karl-Marx-Allee. A two-kilometre socialist boulevard of monumental tiled apartment blocks running east from Alexanderplatz. Walking its length takes about forty minutes and the scale only registers on foot. The Café Moskau and Kino International buildings along the way are the architectural highlights.
