Cologne wears its two thousand years lightly: a Roman foundation, a gothic cathedral that took six centuries to finish, and a postwar rebuild that left the centre pragmatic rather than pretty. Late April suits it, with terrace weather arriving along the Rhine. A Java conference here sits in a city where the brewery taverns operate on their own strict etiquette and a small glass keeps arriving until the mat is covered.
Cologne Bonn (CGN) is fifteen minutes by S-Bahn into the main station. Dusseldorf (DUS) is around forty minutes by regional train, and Frankfurt (FRA) an hour on high-speed ICE services. Koln Hauptbahnhof sits directly beside the cathedral, which puts most arrivals within walking distance of the cathedral, the old town and the river. Trams and an underground Stadtbahn cover the wider city on a single integrated fare, and the compact centre rarely requires either.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Kiwitaxi. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on Auto Europe.
Rhineland coverage is reliable and ICE trains carry onboard Wi-Fi, though it strains under load. An eSIM activated before arrival is the least friction for delegates travelling on from Dusseldorf or Frankfurt. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Kolner Dom. A gothic cathedral of genuinely unusual scale directly outside the main station, free to enter, with a separate climb of over five hundred steps up the south tower. The stained glass includes a modern pixelated window that caused considerable argument. Allow an hour, or ninety minutes with the tower.
Rhine promenade and Hohenzollern Bridge. A river walk from the cathedral across the rail bridge to the Deutz bank, where the classic view back at the cathedral and old town opens up. The bridge fencing is thick with padlocks. Best in the last hour of daylight; forty-five minutes return.
Brauhaus circuit in the Altstadt. The old town's breweries serve Kolsch in small two-hundred-millilitre glasses, replaced automatically by blue-aproned waiters until a beer mat is placed on top. Several of the oldest houses sit within a few streets. It is the local institution rather than a tourist exercise. An evening.
Museum Ludwig. A major modern art collection beside the cathedral, strong on Pop Art, Russian avant-garde and one of the largest Picasso holdings in Europe. It is compact enough to see properly in a single visit. Two hours, and a natural indoor option if the Rhine weather turns. Tickets on Tiqets →
How is the airport connected to the centre?
Cologne Bonn runs an S-Bahn into the main station in about fifteen minutes. Dusseldorf and Frankfurt are also viable at forty and sixty minutes by train.
How does ordering Kolsch work?
Waiters bring fresh small glasses automatically and mark each on the mat. Place a beer mat over the glass to signal that enough is enough.
What is the weather like in late April?
Mild with a real chance of rain off the Rhine. Layers and a light waterproof are sensible; terraces open on the better days.
