Two days in the Colombian capital allow more than the standard museum circuit. Bogotá is a city of neighbourhoods, and its northern colonial enclave at Usaquén, its enormous produce markets and its Sunday ciclovía — when major avenues close entirely to cars — give a better sense of the place than the historic centre alone. October is cool and damp, so layers matter more than anything else you pack.
El Dorado International (BOG) handles the great majority of Colombian air traffic and lies west of the city, typically 30 to 45 minutes from the northern districts by road. Traffic is the main variable. Ride-hailing apps are widely used and generally preferred to street taxis. Intercity buses depart from the Terminal de Transporte for destinations across the country, including the salt cathedral north of the city.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Kiwitaxi. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on EconomyBookings.
Data coverage is dependable across the built-up areas of Bogotá, weakening in the surrounding hills. Setting up an eSIM before departure means transport apps and maps work immediately, which is particularly useful given the airport's distance from the hotel districts. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Usaquén. A colonial village absorbed by the expanding city, now a northern district of cobbled streets, restaurants and a large Sunday flea market. Calmer and safer-feeling than the centre, and close to many business hotels. An afternoon or an evening.
Plaza de Mercado de Paloquemao. A vast wholesale market where the range of Colombian fruit is genuinely startling to most visitors. Go early, ideally before nine, when the flower and produce halls are busiest. Guided food tours operate here. Around ninety minutes.
Museo Nacional de Colombia. The country's oldest museum, housed in a nineteenth-century panopticon prison whose radial cell structure is still legible. Collections cover archaeology, history and art. Centrally located; allow two hours.
Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral. A church carved 180 metres underground inside a working salt mine, roughly an hour and a half north of the city. Reachable by bus or organised tour. The scale of the excavated chambers is the point. A full half-day including travel. Tickets on Tiqets →
How high is Bogotá and does it matter?
About 2,640 metres. Most visitors feel mild breathlessness for the first day or two. Ease into physical activity and keep hydrated.
Is Sunday a good day to explore?
Yes. The ciclovía closes major avenues to traffic on Sunday mornings, opening them to cyclists and pedestrians across large stretches of the city.
What should I pack for October?
Layers and a waterproof. Days are cool and often wet, evenings are cold, and the weather changes quickly at altitude.
