Krakow in late October is atmospheric rather than warm, with temperatures around 8-13C, early dusk and mist settling over the Vistula. For a Java conference the city offers something increasingly rare: a genuine medieval core where the venue, hotels and evening venues are all within a twenty-minute walk. Kazimierz, the former Jewish quarter south of the Old Town, holds most of the late-opening bars where conference conversations continue.
Krakow Airport (KRK) lies about 11km west of the centre, connected by a direct train to Krakow Glowny station in roughly 20 minutes. Katowice (KTW) is a budget-airline alternative around 90 minutes away by bus. Krakow Glowny sits at the edge of the Old Town, and trams cover the rest of the city cheaply. Most conference attendees will find walking sufficient within the historic centre.

Kazimierz district. The historic Jewish quarter, now a dense mix of synagogues, small museums, courtyard bars and the Plac Nowy food stalls. It carries a very different character to the Old Town, quieter by day and busiest late. Walk it in the evening; two hours including a stop for zapiekanka.
Wieliczka Salt Mine. A UNESCO-listed working-era salt mine south-east of the city, with chapels, chandeliers and sculptures carved from rock salt hundreds of metres underground. Main Market Square and Cloth Hall. One of the largest medieval squares in Europe, ringed by townhouses and centred on the Renaissance Cloth Hall trading arcade. The hourly trumpet call from St Mary's tower breaks off mid-phrase by tradition. Best early morning before tour groups. An hour, plus longer if you enter the basilica.
How do I travel from Krakow Airport to the centre?
A direct train runs from the terminal to Krakow Glowny station in about 20 minutes. Tickets can be bought on board or from machines at the airport platform.
Is Krakow walkable for a two-day conference?
Yes. The Old Town, Kazimierz and the main station sit within a compact area, and most points of interest are twenty minutes apart on foot. Trams fill any remaining gaps.
What currency is used and are cards accepted?
Poland uses the zloty, not the euro. Card payment is near universal in Krakow, including on trams and at market stalls, but a small amount of cash is useful for cloakrooms and older bars.
