A machine learning conference landing in Berlin at the end of November finds a city built for long indoor days: museums, research institutes and a dense university sector, all within a short transit ride. The western districts around Charlottenburg offer a quieter, more formal counterpoint to the eastern startup quarters, with grand boulevards and a concentration of scientific institutions that suits the subject matter.
Trains from Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) reach the city centre in about half an hour, with the FEX the quickest and regional services the most frequent. Once in town, the U-Bahn and S-Bahn together cover almost everywhere a visitor needs, and night services run at weekends. Long-distance ICE trains arrive at Hauptbahnhof from Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt and Warsaw among others.

Roaming charges outside the EU add up quickly across a five-day event. A prepaid eSIM keeps data costs flat and predictable. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Charlottenburg Palace. The largest surviving Hohenzollern residence in the city, with baroque state rooms, a porcelain cabinet and formal gardens behind. The interiors are the reason to come; the gardens are stark but atmospheric in winter. Roughly two hours for the main palace circuit. Tickets on Tiqets →
Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. The ruined spire was left broken as a deliberate memorial, paired with a modernist blue-glass nave alongside. The contrast between the two structures is the point. Twenty to thirty minutes, and it sits directly on the Kurfurstendamm shopping strip for anything else needed.
Museum fur Naturkunde. Home to the tallest mounted dinosaur skeleton anywhere and an enormous wet collection of preserved specimens in glass jars. The digitisation and taxonomy exhibits will interest anyone thinking about structured data. Two hours is comfortable; weekday afternoons are least crowded. Tickets on Tiqets →
Teufelsberg. An abandoned Cold War listening station built atop a rubble hill in the Grunewald forest, now covered in large-scale street art. The domes still echo strangely. Getting there involves a suburban train and an uphill walk, so set aside half a day and check winter opening hours first.
Is Berlin walkable between districts?
Individual neighbourhoods are very walkable, but the city is geographically large. Use the U-Bahn and S-Bahn for anything crossing districts.
What are daylight hours like in late November?
The sun sets around mid-afternoon. Plan any outdoor sightseeing for the morning and early afternoon.
Are Christmas markets open during the event?
Berlin's markets generally open in the second half of November, so several will be running by the conference dates.
