Windhoek sits at 1,700 metres in the Khomas Highland, and February falls in the Namibian rainy season, when the surrounding hills are unexpectedly green and afternoon thunderstorms break the heat. The capital is small, low-rise and quiet by international standards, with German colonial-era buildings alongside modern civic architecture. PyCon Namibia has run here for over a decade, and the city's compact centre keeps the conference community close together.
Hosea Kutako International (WDH) is the main airport, roughly 45 minutes east of the city by road; shuttle transfers and taxis are the usual options and are worth arranging in advance. Eros Airport (ERS) handles regional flights closer to town. Most international routes connect through Johannesburg, Cape Town, Frankfurt or Doha. In the city, taxis and ride-hailing cover most needs.

Wi-Fi in Windhoek hotels and conference venues works but bandwidth is more limited than in larger capitals, and mobile data is often the more reliable option. Independence Memorial Museum. A striking modern building in the city centre covering the Namibian liberation struggle across three floors, with a top-floor restaurant and the best view over Windhoek. Entry is free. Around ninety minutes, and it stands beside the Christuskirche and Alte Feste.
Christuskirche. The 1907 Lutheran church in local sandstone is Windhoek's most recognisable landmark, sitting at the head of a roundabout in the centre. It is small, and interesting mainly as a marker of the colonial period the neighbouring museum addresses. Thirty minutes, and it combines naturally with the memorial.
Daan Viljoen Game Reserve. Twenty-five kilometres west of the city, this hill-country reserve holds zebra, oryx and kudu with walking trails and no dangerous predators, making self-guided hikes possible. February greenery is at its best. Half a day, and go early before the afternoon storms.
Namibia Craft Centre. In the Old Breweries complex downtown, gathering work from craft cooperatives across the country's regions, from Kavango basketry to Himba jewellery. It is the most direct way to buy from producers rather than resellers. An hour, and it is closed on Sundays.
