Brothers Grimm National Monument. The bronze memorial to Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm stands on Hanau's market square, marking the town at the start of the German Fairy Tale Route. It takes minutes to see but anchors the surrounding old town walk. Combine it with the market square cafés.
Frankfurt Museumsufer. Thirty minutes west by train, the Main's south bank holds a dozen museums in a row, including the Städel's European painting collection and the German Architecture Museum. Steinheim old town. A preserved district across the river with half-timbered houses and a small castle museum, reachable on foot from central Hanau via the Main bridge. It survived the wartime destruction that reshaped the town centre. About an hour, quiet and rarely visited.
